After being diagnosed with an allergy to bee venom I decided to get a sting-proof suit. I faint due to lowered blood pressure if I get stung. Although I have an Epipen I've been advised by the hospital that no matter how slight a sting I get I need to report to hospital for six hours observation. A big incentive not to get stung through a cotton bee suit.
There are many vented sting-proof suits on the market but Swienty are a recognised brand so I decided to buy one of theirs. I've also bought other products of theirs and have been impressed by them.
First bit of advice is speak to GG about sizing before buying. I'm short but stocky and the lady I spoke to recommended a medium as the suits are a bit snug. It fits perfectly on my torso but as usual the legs are a bit long for my 28 inch legs. No problem once you've got your wellies on.
Lots of useful features. The cuffs do up with velcro straps not elasticated as on other suits. No gaps for bees to crawl in if they are done up tight. Lots of pockets and all zip shut. The veil gauze is very stiff and forms a rigid 'bubble' over your head. The suit folds up and then can be stored inside the veil.
It is cool in the summer if you're in a breeze but now the temperature is dropping a jumper is needed under the suit.
We chose this make as a) someone at our local apiary had the same make and b) it looked great value for money considering some of the options we looked at. It looks very well made, the fit was true to size, although for a woman a bit long in the leg (having said that there is no chance a bee is getting inside the suit legs when tucked into my boots). It has 3 layers and I felt confident in it, a bee would certainly have trouble stinging you through it. There is plenty of room for movement and I particulary like the toggle string at the waist on the inside and also the design of the veil. It's first outing served me well and I reckon it will last for a good while. I'm glad I invested that bit extra for the comfort and protection.
Perfect fit, had an XL and I’m 6’2” and athletic build. Highly recommend this for its fit and comfort in the warm weather. Great service too from Gwenyn and Gruffydd
My previous suit waa a standard Swienty purchased about 10 years ago and it has served me very well, but is a little tired after heavy use. I have been surprised by how well the mesh fabric of the Breeze performs with lively colonies. They can’t sting into the mesh into (unlike normal cotton fabric), so there are no sting scents circulating and the other guard bees are not attracted. It makes inspections much more relaxed! The Thomas gloves seem good, but the fingers are too long, so I am awaiting a replacement pair.
I am so impressed with the quality of this suit, I had bought a suit from elsewhere that was very tight for me so gave that to my wife. This Swienty was double the price but well worth it. The finish of the stitching zips and vail are so well made. Being short and fat 5’6” and XL the body and arms are just perfect however the leg length is approx. 18 cm too long so had to gather it up. I will get a seamstress to shorten the length well worth the bother I feel. The gather makes it a bit hot on the legs and potential for the bee to hind in the crevis. I have the same problem with all clothing so not going the mark this great product down for the size. Not sure if there is a talor made version, would be a good idea.
