Langstroth Floors, Roofs & Boards
Langstroth Hive Floors, Roofs and Boards
Maintain, repair or customise your Langstroth beehive with our range of Langstroth hive floors, roofs and boards. Shop solid and ventilated bottom boards, weather-resistant hive roofs, crown boards, inner covers and clearer boards for wooden and moulded plastic Langstroth hive systems.
These essential Langstroth hive parts protect the colony, support ventilation and make routine hive management easier. Our collection includes wooden equipment from Thornes and Thomas Apiculture alongside moulded components for ANEL plastic Langstroth hives.
Langstroth hive floors
The Langstroth hive floor, also known as a bottom board, supports the brood boxes and forms the colony entrance. It must provide a stable base, allow bees to enter and leave freely, and fit the external dimensions of the hive body above it.
A solid Langstroth floor provides a traditional enclosed base. Reversible models may offer alternative entrance depths or seasonal configurations, depending on their design.
A ventilated or open mesh floor increases airflow and allows debris and naturally falling varroa mites to pass through the mesh. Some screened floors accept a removable monitoring tray, which can be inserted temporarily to assess natural mite drop.
Neither design is automatically suitable for every colony or location. Your choice may depend on the hive system, local climate, pest-management approach and personal beekeeping method.
Langstroth hive roofs
A secure Langstroth beehive roof protects the upper hive components from rain and other weather. Wooden roofs with a galvanised metal covering provide traditional protection, while moulded plastic roofs offer a lightweight, low-maintenance option within compatible hive systems.
Selected ANEL roofs feature ventilation or feeding-hole plugs. These openings can be adjusted according to the equipment and management method being used. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid unwanted gaps or excessive ventilation.
Inspect the roof regularly for damage and make sure water drains away from the hive. In exposed apiaries, roofs should be secured against strong winds using an appropriate strap or weight.
Crown boards and inner covers
A Langstroth crown board or inner cover sits above the uppermost brood box or honey super and below the outer roof. It closes the top of the colony while allowing the roof to be removed without immediately exposing the bees.
Wooden crown boards may include holes for feeders or bee escapes. Transparent plastic inner covers allow the beekeeper to observe activity at the top of the hive with minimal disturbance. Ventilated covers can provide additional airflow where appropriate.
Openings should be covered or used correctly for the season. An unused feeding or escape hole may create unwanted access into the roof space.
Langstroth clearer boards
A Langstroth clearer board helps remove bees from full honey supers before extraction. One-way bee escapes allow bees to move down towards the brood chamber while making it difficult for them to return to the supers.
Options include rhombus, star-shaped and Canadian-style clearer boards. Performance depends on correct positioning, a secure fit and the absence of gaps through which bees can re-enter.
Clearer boards are intended for temporary use. Check the supers after an appropriate period and remove the board once the bees have cleared.
Check Langstroth compatibility before ordering
Langstroth equipment is used worldwide, but dimensions are not completely universal. Components can vary between regional formats, wooden hives and proprietary moulded systems.
Before purchasing a replacement floor, roof or board, check:
-
The external length and width of your hive boxes
-
Whether your hive is an eight-, nine- or 10-frame system
-
The manufacturer and material of your existing hive
-
Whether the component is designed for wood or moulded plastic boxes
-
Whether mesh, trays, plugs or bee escapes are included
-
Whether the product is assembled or supplied flat packed
For the most reliable fit, use parts from the same system or confirm the measurements of both components before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a solid and ventilated Langstroth floor?
A solid floor has an enclosed base, while a ventilated floor uses mesh to increase airflow and allow debris and falling mites to pass through. Both can be used successfully as part of an appropriate hive-management system.
Is an open mesh floor a varroa treatment?
No. A screened floor can support monitoring and may allow some naturally falling mites to leave the hive, but it is not a complete varroa-control programme. Colonies still require regular monitoring and treatment when thresholds and current guidance indicate it is necessary.
What is the difference between a crown board and a clearer board?
A crown board or inner cover normally remains beneath the roof as part of the hive. A clearer board is fitted temporarily below the honey supers to remove bees before harvesting.
Will any Langstroth roof fit my hive?
Not necessarily. External dimensions and profiles vary between manufacturers, particularly between wooden and plastic systems. Check measurements and product compatibility before ordering.
How do I use a Langstroth clearer board?
Place it below the supers to be cleared, with the one-way escape oriented so bees can travel towards the brood chamber. Close any alternative routes into the supers, then inspect and remove the board after the bees have moved down.
Should a hive lean forwards?
A slight forward slope can help rainwater or condensation drain towards the entrance, particularly with solid wooden floors. The hive should remain level from side to side so frames hang correctly.
