      Langstroth Nuc Boxes and Parts

Raise new queens, create colony splits, house small colonies or collect swarms with our range of Langstroth nuc boxes and parts. Choose from five- and six-frame nucleus hives, reusable transport boxes, wooden nucs and insulated polystyrene nuc boxes, plus compatible brood extensions, queen excluders, entrances and frame spacers.

Our collection includes assembled wooden Langstroth nucs from Thomas Apiculture and versatile Quarti poly nucs manufactured in Italy. Options are available for individual beekeepers as well as commercial apiaries requiring nuc boxes in pallet quantities.

What is a Langstroth nuc box?

A Langstroth nucleus hive, commonly called a nuc box, is a compact beehive designed to hold fewer deep Langstroth frames than a full-sized colony. Its reduced internal space is easier for a small population of bees to occupy, defend and regulate.

Beekeepers use Langstroth nuc boxes for:

      • Establishing a newly purchased nucleus colony

      • Making splits from strong colonies

      • Raising or introducing a new queen

      • Temporarily housing a captured swarm

      • Keeping a spare queen and support colony

      • Overwintering a suitably strong small colony

      • Transporting bees between apiaries

A nuc is not simply a miniature honey-production hive. It is a flexible colony-management tool that can help beekeepers increase colony numbers and respond to queen loss or swarm preparations.

      Wooden and poly Langstroth nucs

A wooden Langstroth nuc box provides a traditional home for a small colony. Assembled models remove the need for flat-pack construction and may include a weather-resistant galvanised roof. The exterior should be protected or maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

An insulated poly Langstroth nuc is lightweight and helps moderate temperature changes around a small colony. Quarti six-frame nucs are made from high-density polystyrene and feature reinforced edges and a metal lid.

Selected Quarti nuc boxes have a two-in-one configuration that can hold one six-frame colony or be divided into two three-frame compartments with a suitable divider and separate entrances. This flexibility is useful for queen rearing and managing very small colonies, but each compartment must have appropriate access and compatible internal fittings.

      Five-frame transport and swarm boxes

A Langstroth nuc transport box provides secure temporary accommodation when moving a nucleus colony, collecting a swarm or transferring frames between apiaries. Our reusable five-frame box offers a more rigid alternative to lightweight disposable packaging.

Transport boxes are intended primarily for short-term containment rather than permanent colony housing. Before moving live bees, ensure that the lid and entrance are secure, ventilation is unobstructed and the box is protected from excessive heat. Keep travel time and disturbance to a minimum.

      Langstroth nuc extensions and accessories

A compatible nuc brood box extension adds extra frame capacity above the original body. This can provide space for a growing colony or additional stores without immediately transferring the bees into a full 10-frame hive.

      Our range also includes:

      • Queen excluders for compatible six-frame nucs

      • Replacement zinc-coated entrances and doors

      • Reinforced castellated frame spacers

      • Dividers for convertible nuc configurations

      • Frame rests and inspection accessories

Use manufacturer-matched parts wherever possible. A component intended for a Quarti six-frame nuc should not automatically be assumed to fit a wooden nuc or another brand.

Choosing the right Langstroth nuc box

      Before ordering, consider:

      • Whether you require five- or six-frame capacity

      • The number and depth of the frames being used

      • Permanent colony housing or temporary transport

      • Wooden or insulated polystyrene construction

      • Whether a divided three-plus-three setup is required

      • Compatibility with extensions and other nuc parts

      • Whether frames, foundation or bees are included

Most nuc-box listings refer to the equipment only. Frames, foundation and a live nucleus colony are normally purchased separately unless the product description expressly includes them.

Gwenyn Gruffydd is a family-run beekeeping business in West Wales. We manage more than 400 hives and use nucs for practical colony management within our own apiaries. Our team can help you choose suitable Langstroth nucleus hive equipment for hobby, breeding and commercial use.

      Frequently asked questions

How many frames does a Langstroth nuc hold?

The nucs in this collection generally hold five or six deep Langstroth frames. Capacity varies by model, so check the individual product specification before ordering.

Does a Langstroth nuc box include bees?

No. A nuc box is normally empty beekeeping equipment. A “nucleus colony” is a live group of bees supplied on frames with a queen, brood and food stores. Read the listing carefully to establish exactly what is included.

How long can bees stay in a nuc box?

A colony can remain in a nuc while it has adequate space, food and ventilation. Once the bees occupy most frames and the colony is expanding quickly, it may need an extension or transfer into a full-sized Langstroth hive.

Can a nuc colony survive winter?

A healthy, well-provisioned nuc can overwinter successfully with appropriate management and suitable local conditions. Smaller colonies have less margin for error, so food stores, queen status, pests, ventilation and insulation require careful monitoring.

Can I divide a six-frame nuc into two colonies?

Only if the nuc is designed for divided use and has a secure internal divider, separate entrances and the correct fittings. Each side also needs sufficient bees, brood, food and an appropriate queen or queen-rearing plan.

Will any Langstroth frame fit these nuc boxes?

Nuc boxes usually take deep Langstroth brood frames, but regional and manufacturer specifications can vary. Confirm frame length, depth and box capacity before purchasing.

When should I move a nuc into a full hive?

Transfer the colony when it is established, expanding and occupying most of the available frames. Prepare the receiving hive first and keep the frames in the same order and orientation during the move.
