Choosing the Right Honey Extractor

Compare manual and electric, tangential and radial honey extractors, discover our three bundles and choose the right capacity for your apiary.

Choosing the right extractor

The right honey extractor depends on five things: your frame format, the number of frames you process at each harvest, whether you prefer manual or electric operation, the space available in your extracting room and which uncapping, filtering and settling equipment you already own.

For 1–4 hives, a two- or three-frame manual tangential extractor is normally enough. For 5–20 hives, a 12-frame radial model reduces loading and frame handling. Regular larger harvests are much easier with an electric 12-, 18- or 20-frame extractor. Commercial apiaries should plan the extractor as part of a complete processing line.

Tangential or radial: what is the difference?

In a tangential extractor, one face of the comb points towards the drum wall. The outward-facing side is extracted first, then the frame is turned. This gives strong extracting force and suits small apiaries, deep frames, delicate comb and lower-volume work.

In a radial extractor, frames sit like spokes in a wheel. Honey leaves both faces during the same cycle, so frames do not normally need turning. Radial machines process more frames with less handling and are ideal for growing apiaries and batches of shallow super frames. Some radial models take fewer deep frames tangentially, so always compare shallow and deep capacity separately.

Manual or electric operation

A manual extractor costs less, needs no power supply and gives the operator direct control. It is a dependable choice for occasional use and smaller harvests.

An electric extractor reduces fatigue and frees you to prepare the next batch while the machine runs. It becomes increasingly worthwhile when you process several supers at a time, extract repeatedly through the season or find hand cranking uncomfortable. If your apiary is growing, consider a manual model such as the Thomas Apiculture Prinox 12-frame extractor that can be motorised later.

Our honey extracting bundles

The Carl Fritz PRO Bundle centres on a premium German-made 12-frame radial extractor with the quiet Whispering Witch electric drive. It suits regular extraction where effortless speed control, quiet running and long-term durability are priorities.

Comparing our extractor range

Two- and three-frame tangential extractors suit beginners and small crops. Plastic models offer the lowest entry price; stainless-steel machines provide greater durability. The four-frame Thomas package is excellent value for Langstroth users but is not compatible with British Standard National frames.

Our 12-frame radial extractors are the versatile middle of the range. Manual Quarti and Prinox models suit growing hobby apiaries, while electric Prinox and Carl Fritz machines reduce effort and increase throughput. The Carl Fritz 18-frame and the Thomas Radianox or Carl Fritz 72cm 20-frame class machines serve larger sideline operations. The 36-frame Thomas Euromel is designed for commercial production and 100+ hives.

Capacity usually refers to shallow frames. Check the listed frame formats, dimensions and separate deep-frame capacity before ordering.

What size extractor do you need?

For 1–4 hives, choose a two- or three-frame manual tangential extractor. For 5–10 hives, a compact three-frame system still works, but a 12-frame radial machine saves repeated loading. For 10–20 hives, a 12-frame radial extractor is the natural all-round size; choose electric if you handle several supers per session.

For 20–50 hives, look at 18- and 20-frame electric radial machines. At this level, frame compatibility, draining speed and cleaning access matter as much as capacity. From 50 hives upwards, calculate expected frames per hour and check that uncapping, filtering and tank capacity can keep pace. At 100+ hives, plan a dedicated commercial extraction line.

Hive numbers are a guide rather than a strict rule. A short harvest window or unusually productive colonies can justify buying larger.

Extracting safely and common questions

Only extract ripe honey. Remove the wax cappings, load frames evenly and pair similar weights opposite one another. Start slowly, especially with fresh or heavily laden comb, then increase speed as the frames lighten. Turn tangential frames to extract both faces. Strain the honey into a covered settling tank and rinse food-contact surfaces with warm or hot water after use.

Can uncapped frames be extracted? Open cells may contain ripe honey, but never assume they are ready. Check representative cells with a calibrated refractometer because excess moisture can cause fermentation.

Will every extractor accept National and Langstroth frames? No. Check the exact model. Does a 12-frame extractor hold 12 brood frames? Usually not; the quoted capacity commonly refers to shallow frames. Why does an extractor shake? Stop it and rebalance the load. Do you need a settling tank? Yes: it lets bubbles and fine wax rise and frees the extractor for the next batch.

Heather honey is thixotropic and normally needs loosening, pressing or specialist processing before it will leave the comb effectively.

When to consider commercial extraction equipment

Once extraction becomes a production line rather than an occasional task, the largest drum is only part of the answer. Commercial systems must balance powered uncapping, extractor throughput, outlet size, continuous draining, sumps, level alarms, pumps, food-grade hoses, settling tanks, cappings processing, power supply, drainage and cleaning.
